| Nobody is positive why whales breach, but there are many
theories, most of which have been backed up by observations. Whales breach to communicate (it's a very
loud splash), to protect their young (a mother whale was once seen to breach across the back of an
attacking shark), to stun schools of fish at the surface, to help settle their gut after eating a
ton of small fish, to enable safe breathing on choppy days, and for many other reasons. My favorite reason that a whale would leap out of its
known existence and into our world above the waves is because it can. It's gotta be fun.
