More about Bruce B. Clendenning...
Bruce was born in Hanover, NH where he grew up hiking, biking, fishing, and camping in the
woods near his home and in the White Mountains. He attended high school in Hanover and at Gould
Academy in Bethel, Maine. He received a B.A. at Brandeis University, where he completed majors in
Anthropology and English and American Literature. He completed an M.A. in Environmental and
Resource Policy at the George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Bruce first started focusing his attention on photography while he worked as a volunteer naturalist
aboard the New England Aquarium's whale watch boats the Voyager and Voyager II. Bruce has spent
thousands of hours travelling and hiking throughout New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont
photographing the natural beauty the region is famous for. While living in the nation's capitol, Bruce
traveled frequently throughout the Mid-Atlantic region photographing the wildlife and landscapes in
Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. In January of 1997, Bruce moved to
Phoenix, AZ. He now travels throughout Arizona, New Mexico, and California collecting images of the
stark beauty of the west and the impacts that man has had on the landscape of the region.
Previous to moving to the Southwest, Bruce's photography focused upon the subtleties of nature
which are so beautiful in the smaller scales and perspectives of the East. Since moving to the West, he
has spent a great deal of time exploring the interplay between the subtle and the dramatic in the larger,
more expansive scale of the American west. As always, illustrating the beauty and behaviors of animals
of all sorts living within the landscape is an important component of his photography.
